Planning a Lights On! Event: How to Engage your Policymaker and the Media

Join the Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool/Youth Development Network (PSAYDN), the Afterschool Alliance in celebrating the 11th Annual Lights On Afterschool!

To help prepare those who have already registered their event and those who are considering hosting an event, PSAYDN is pleased to offer a unique one-hour, online training session entitled Planning a Lights On! Event: How to Engage your Policymaker and the Media. This online training will provide participants with tips and tools to develop events that attract media attention, policymaker support, as well as parent, school and business stakeholder engagement and ultimately highlight the importance of afterschool programs in the community. 

Planning a Lights On! Event: How to Engage your Policymaker and the Media is scheduled for Wednesday, September 15, 2010 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (EST).

Lights On Afterschool is celebrated annually to call attention to the importance of afterschool programs for America's children, families and communities across the country. This session will be facilitated by Kacy Conley, Director for the PA Statewide Afterschool/Youth Development Network and presented by Ursula Helminski, Vice President of External Affairs for the Afterschool Alliance. Local programs throughout Pennsylvania will also share their techniques for producing a quality Lights On Event and how they effectively engage both policymakers and the media.

This session is intended for individuals and organizations interested in advocating for afterschool and youth development programs.

All participants registered by September 8, 2010 will receive a Lights On! promotional packet for the event.

Southwestern Pennsylvania Regional Summit on Afterschool

OUT-OF-SCHOOL TIME (OST): The K-12 Connection of Out-of-School Time to College, Career and Workforce Development

Participants will have the opportunity to network and examine the state of OST in Pittsburgh and surrounding counties.

Keynote Speaker: Darrell "Coach D” Andrews, Education Consultant, speaker and author of the books, Believing the HYPE-Seven Keys To Motivating Students of Color and The Purpose Living Teen, A Teen’s Guide To Living Your Dreams will share real world, time tested motivational strategies that can be used by OST providers, educators, and workforce staff to help children and youth make the dream-education connection. Coach D’s experiences stem from his success as an OST provider and the developer of the nationally acclaimed HYPE (Helping Youth Pursue Excellence)
leadership, career development and soft skills training program.

The 6th Annual National Conference on Inclusion, After the Bell Rings: Innovative Strategies for Including All Children in Out-of-School Time Programs

September 29-October 1, 2010
San Diego, CA

The conference will feature 20 break-out sessions for all levels of practitioner. Those new to inclusion will find a strand of building blocks designed to provide the tools necessary to get started. Staff working directly with children will gain practical techniques and fun new activities to implement immediately. Federation of Neighborhood Centers
Advancing Youth Development Training Conference


October 19 to 21 2010; Philadelphia, PA

A three-day course that introduces and familiarizes youth workers to the “youth development” approach and its implications for youth work practice. The concepts and applications presented in this training have been implemented nationally by the National Center for Youth Development and Policy Research, part of the Academy for Educational Development (AED) in Washington, D.C. Participants will:

* Gain a familiarity with the development approach and use this approach to explore, share and learn new strategies for working with young people.

* Strengthen their ability to communicate their ideas, expertise and experience to their constituencies: board members, families, co-workers, communities and youth.

* Identify barriers to organizational change and discuss practical strategies for integrating a youth development approach to their programs.

* Form an informal network and become ongoing resources to each other.
