Planning a Lights On! Event: How to Engage your Policymaker and the Media

Session Description: Join the Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool/Youth Development Network (PSAYDN), the Afterschool Alliance in celebrating the 11th Annual Lights On Afterschool!

To help prepare those who have already registered their event and those who are considering hosting an event, PSAYDN offere a one-hour, online training session entitled Planning a Lights On! Event: How to Engage your Policymaker and the Media. This online training provided participants with tips and tools to develop events that attract media attention, policymaker support, as well as parent, school and business stakeholder engagement and ultimately highlight the importance of afterschool programs in the community. 

Lights On Afterschool is celebrated annually to call attention to the importance of afterschool programs for America's children, families and communities across the country. Local programs throughout Pennsylvania also shared their techniques for producing a quality Lights On Event and how they effectively engage both policymakers and the media.

Teacher Education and Compensation Helps (T.E.A.C.H.) Early Childhood® Scholarship Opportunity

Session Description: The presenter was Ms. Laurie Litz, Vice President, Workforce Development Pennsylvania Child Care Association and Director, T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood® PA. Ms. Lutz conducted an informative orientation session on the newly expanded Teacher Education and Compensation Helps (T.E.A.C.H.) Early Childhood® Scholarship opportunity which part time school age as well as youth development staff are now eligible to receive. Ms. Lutz explained how you can receive scholarship assistance as well paid time to take classes, child care reimbursement, travel costs and a bonus upon completion of course work to support you in improving your professional knowledge and skills.

Who Should Attend/Listen to Recording: Afterschool and Youth Development Staff  serving K-12 children and youth who would like find out how to apply for a scholarship to earn a degree, certification, or get further training while staying employed at their program.

 

Offered by the Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool/Youth Development Network (PSAYDN) and the Pennsylvania Child Care Association (PACCA) offered a live, online session in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Planning a Lights On Event: How to Engage your Policymaker and the Media

On Tuesday, September 29, 2009 the Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool/Youth Development Network offered a live, online session entitled: Planning a Lights On Event: How to Engage your Policymakers and the Media.

Lights On Afterschool is celebrated annually to call attention to the importance of afterschool programs for America's children, families and communities across the country.

This session was facilitated by Kathleen (Kacy) Conley, Director for the PA Statewide Afterschool/Youth Development Network and presented by Ursula Helminski, Vice President of External Affairs for the Afterschool Alliance and Tyra Good, Director of Education and Training, YouthPlaces and Greater Pittsburgh Afterschool Peer Network.

This session was intended for individuals and organizations interested in advocating for afterschool and youth development programs.

Education Mentoring
Building the Capacity of Communities to Provide Mentoring Services

The Center for Schools and Communities, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool/Youth Development Network and the Pennsylvania Department of Education, recently offered a live, online session entitled "Building the Capacity of Communities to Provide Mentoring Services." The session provided information about the value of mentoring, specifically for after-school and other school-related programs, as well as what individual and organizations can do to promote the development of mentoring programs within their community. The presenters were Lynda Terrell, Managing Director, Campaign for Mentors - United Way of Southeastern PA and Colleen Fedor, Executive Director, The Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern PA.
