We started a new program at Francis Scott Key School in July of 2016. All parties involved, including staff had some reservations about how a pilot free literacy program would work. In the middle of summer, with new faces and no formal relationships. Our youth were hesitant about the curriculum when we first presented it to them. They thought that had been signed up for a Summer School.

Working with these students in an afterschool setting is an eye opening experience. The program has such a positive impact on students not only academically but also socially and emotionally as well.

Though each member gains confidence in their academic skills and has their educational needs met, they are also learning valuable life skills to help them succeed as citizens, both inside and outside of the school setting.
